Jesse Miller was a guest speaker in our class today.
Mr. Miller raised many points surrounding the professionalism that must be used when accessing the internet. Teachers are held to a magnifying glass when it comes to their personal lives. For example, a teacher posting an image of them simply having a glass of wine with supper may raise issues with parents or employers despite that teacher’s legal right to responsibly enjoy a beverage. Now, this is not to say that parents and employers are not wrong in being critical of who is helping educate their children in their day to day life. But, it does mean teachers must be smart in their use of social media and how they may be perceived.
Having Jesse come in and provide insights and knowledge as to how to prepare ourselves, as future teachers, for the image that is expected of us by future employers was valuable. This information is very valuable for a generation where their identity is tied to the use of social media.
Major takeaways from the speech are:
- Have personal and professional accounts, such as email.
- Be aware of how people might perceive the content that one is publishing.
- Use the internet responsibly at all times.
- The internet can add tremendously to the learning of students if used correctly.
